Troubled pop star Britney Spears is not yet fit to participate in court proceedings in her power-of-attorney case, her lawyer told a superior court commissioner.

Samuel Ingham, Spears' court-appointed lawyer, and lawyers for her father and conservator, James Spears, spent 90 minutes in Los Angeles commissioner Reva Goetz's chambers.

Mr Ingham told the court afterwards that Spears' medical condition was "fluid" because her treatment was changing.

Spears' probate case is due to go to trial on July 31, but Mr Ingham said it could be "harmful" for her to participate.

Ms Goetz agreed and said Spears' diagnosis was not complete.

The 26-year-old singer and her estate have been under the conservatorship of her father for four months.

Soles4Souls, the international charity dedicated to providing free footwear to those in desperate need, announced that it will partner with Finish Line to launch a national shoe trade-in program at all 700 Finish Line store locations.

The donation program, "Sole Destination," will begin on Sunday, June 1, 2008 and end on July 31, 2008 and will be one of many events for the charity's National Barefoot Week to be held June 1-7, 2008.

"During Barefoot Week, we hope to draw attention to the over 300 million children worldwide who have never owned a pair of shoes, and also empower people to make a difference by cleaning out their closet to donate their shoes," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls.

International Diamond Laboratories (IDL), subsidiary of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) - a Dubai government initiative held its first graduation ceremony where 16 students, who successfully completed its inaugural 6-day course on the retail jewellery industry, received IDL Retail Jewellery Masterclass Diplomas.

If you got your pit bull from a shelter, you might be one of those - you know - Thug Types. So says PETA.



Pit bull owner Charles Brettell wrote recently to challenge PETA on their position which calls for the death of all sheltered pit bulls. (Compassionate much?) A PETA spokesman explained:

But we must consider that nice families rarely come to a shelter to adopt pit bulls; almost without exception, those who want pit bulls are attracted to the "macho" image of the breed as a living weapon and seek to play up this image by putting the animals in heavy chains, taunting them into aggression, and leaving them outside in all weather extremes in order to "toughen" them. There is no denying that pit bulls are at a higher risk of suffering a horrible fate. - Jeff Haines PETA Spokesman

"Over the years we've enjoyed numerous thug-centric activities with Riley, including obedience classes, long walks around our middle-class suburban neighborhood, intense fetch sessions in our backyard, and hours of snuggling on the couch.

A lot of my time is spent caring for our four dogs (we also claim a chocolate lab, a husky and a shar-pei/possible pit bull mix as members of our family), but I also enjoy reading, jogging, traveling, spending time with family and friends, and volunteering with my local animal rescue organization. I currently work in an administrative position for a large veterinary hospital, but this summer I will be entering a full-time graduate program in Education at Louisiana State University. Next year I hope to start teaching English classes to middle-school students, where the first order of business will be learning the definition of "stereotype."

Watch out Louisiana. That lady is packin' some real Cajun pit bull heat!

We did our first official adoption of a Vick dog last Saturday. Little Dutch was grabbed up by none other than BR's ace trainer, Linda Chwistek and her husband Bill. Linda's been looking for an agility dog for ages and when she met Dutch and recognized his courage, drive and natural talent, she told us "I haven't been this excited since I tasted my first candy bar!"



Unfortunately, a specialist noted that Dutch's joints would not be able to endure the stress of the sport, so Linda sadly resigned to let him go so she can continue her search. Until she phoned us that is, to report that she wants him anyway. ha! Dutch made such an impression on these guys - and they meet hundreds of dogs every year - that they couldn't let him go. While Linda is still looking for her agility star, there are plans to give Dutch a different, less strenuous vocation (details to come). The adoption ceremony was captured by a film crew for Animal Planet and will air in August. We'll give a heads up when that happens.

Moral of the Story? Some of the most precious treasures can come from some of the darkest of places. You'll never know unless you look.



On another note, we're all feeling very grateful for a kind donation from the friends of a remarkable San Francisco resident who died last year. Micheal Keenan was a pit bull owner and all around animal lover. He ran into a burning building to save the life of his friend's jack russell terrier and later died from the burns that resulted. A Hero's Story

We were able to use the funds to help transport five AZ bust dogs from Tucson to CA. The dogs narrowly escaped a sad fate. (We're still grieving for the ones we couldn't help).

Coincidentally, one of the dogs transported is a brindle, just like this pup shown with Michael. (Movie: Joker) Much gratitude to Michael for inspiring so many to be heroes through your selfless actions. And thank you to his friends, including Leslie Hayne, for donating to the dogs in Michael's name.

A rare thing has occured here in Coeur d'Alene this spring. . .due to The Long Winter of '08 (a record-breaking winter on many accounts!) there are (were) huge amounts of snow that have been melting ever since the weather started trying to warm up. This has resulted in flooding on Lake Coeur d'Alene and the connecting rivers. We had The Long Winter of '08, now we get The Great Flood of '08. :-)


(Left) This is one of the park benches downtown near the lake. The bench is not right on the water, so the lake has risen so much that the bench is now IN the water!



(Right) Here you can kind of see that the lake is up all the way to the lifeguard chairs on the City Beach. The water is usually much farther back. The water is now almost up to the wall keeping it out of the park!
(Left) Here is the Coeur d'Alene Resort, and the water. You can just tell it's high by looking at the picture. Trust me, it really is!
(Right) My friend and I checked out the Post Falls Dam the other day. The picture doesn't begin to do it justice. There is so much water rushing through at such a high power and it is breathtaking to watch. This time of year the dam and falls are practically the North Idaho version of Niagra Falls. :-) Only, there are no barrels to ride over these falls!
The winter was long and, at times, miserable, but it is so amazing now to see the lake doing something it hasn't done for 11 years and (hopefully!) won't do again for awhile -- flooding!

Kim Kardashian hosted her own White Party in the Hamptons last night with boyfriend Reggie Bush, and told reporters, "I'm about two months pregnant right now and we're getting married on August 8th of 2008." Obviously she was kidding, but she scared Reggie there for a second!

The couple hosted the soiree at The White House in the Hamptons, and that was a first for Kim, who said she had never partied out there before. She's giving Diddy a little competition! His infamous bash comes at the end of summer on Labor Day.

Keira Knightley says the best way to get her into bed is to make her laugh.

The actress - who stars in upcoming movie 'The Edge of Love', which is about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas - finds a good sense of humour very attractive in a man.

She said: "I think people get laughed into bed, don't they?"

Although Keira doesn't think the late Dylan Thomas was a good looking man, she can understand why women were attracted to him because of his wonderful poetry.

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actress - who stars opposite Matthew Rhys, who portrays Dylan, in the movie - explained to Total Film magazine: "Dylan Thomas did s**g around but you look at pictures of him and he was no hunk. However, his poetry is extraordinary. He's a mischief-maker, a puck. He just wants to prod and see what happens.

"There is a spirit and a sexiness to Matthew Rhys' Dylan that's quite dangerous because you know he's a s**t. But that doesn't mean he's not attractive. Do you think only nice blokes get girls into bed?"

She’s had a pretty rough time with romance, having been divorced three times from ex-husbands Tommy Lee, Kid Rock, and Rick Salomon. But Pamela Anderson isn’t giving up on love.

The former Baywatch babe was spotted out and about in Malibu, California yesterday enjoying the company of a mystery man. And they were looking mighty friendly together!

Pammie took her gentleman caller on a romantic stroll around her gated community before taking him back to her house. Both of them looked comfy in their workout gear as they made the most of the beautiful weather.

On a related note, it sounds like Miss Anderson’s assets are getting other people in trouble. At least, that’s the case for a 32-year-old woman who was just convicted of unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 17.

Apparently, the whole thing started back in January 2007 when Courtney Isabella Bailey substituted a picture of Pamela Anderson’s breasts for her own in a text message conversation with her 15-year-old co-worker. The two ended up hooking up, with charges being filed later.

New York & Company Inc, a specialty apparel chain with 586 retail stores, announced results for the first quarter ended May 3, 2008.

The results of operations discussed below are for the Company's continuing operations only, the New York & Company brand.

For the first quarter of fiscal year 2008, net sales were $270.1 million, as compared to $274.2 million for the first quarter of fiscal year 2007. Comparable store sales for the first quarter of fiscal year 2008 decreased 6.6%, compared to a 0.7% decrease in the prior year first quarter.

Net income from continuing operations for the first quarter of fiscal year 2008 was $6.7 million, or $0.11 per diluted share, as compared to prior year net income from continuing operations of $5.2 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, representing a 37.5% increase in earnings per diluted share.

Richard P. Crystal, New York & Company's Chairman and CEO, stated: "We are pleased to report better than expected first quarter results. During the period, we maintained our inventory and expense management discipline while providing our customers with compelling fashions across our apparel and accessory categories. At the same time, we eliminated non-brand building promotions.

These strategies, in a difficult consumer environment, proved highly successful for our Company and brand, as evidenced by our increase in gross profit margin and a 37.5% rise in earnings per share for the period. We expect the environment for consumer spending to remain difficult this year and as such will maintain our previously stated strategies.

Zumiez Inc reported results for the first quarter ended May 3, 2008.

Total net sales for the first quarter (13 weeks) ended May 3, 2008 increased by 14.4% to $78.7 million from $68.8 million reported in the first quarter ended May 5, 2007 (13 weeks). The company posted net income for the quarter of $1.4 million or $0.05 per diluted share versus $1.6 million or $0.06 per diluted share in the first quarter of the prior fiscal year. Comparable store sales decreased 0.8% for the first quarter of fiscal 2008 compared to an 11.3% increase in the first quarter of fiscal 2007.

Rick Brooks, President and Chief Executive Officer of Zumiez Inc, stated, "While the retail environment remains challenging, we continue to concentrate our efforts in the areas we can best impact, including driving sales dollars per transaction, controlling expenses, carefully managing inventories and ensuring that our team remains energized and focused.

2008 Outlook:
The company reiterated its diluted earnings per share guidance of approximately $0.90 to $0.93 for fiscal 2008. This guidance is based on anticipated square footage growth of approximately 20% and on flat to low-single digit increases in comparable store sales. Weighted average diluted shares for the fiscal year are expected to be approximately 29,700,000.

In putting forth this outlook, the company reminds investors of the complexity of accurately assessing future growth given the difficulty in predicting fashion trends and consumer preferences, boardsports popularity and participation rates, general economic conditions, weather and the impact of other business variables and risks.

Fine jewelry manufacturer Andin International, the parent company of Jewelry.com, announced that it has received the Vendor of the Year Award, Jewelry Division, from JCPenney.

The award was presented at JCPenney Supplier's Summit, held at the company's headquarters in Plano, Texas, on May 14th, 2008.

This is the second time in three years that JCPenney has honored Andin for its excellence. In 2006 Andin was named Vendor of the Year, Jewelry Division for introducing Circle Pendants to JCPenney.

Presenting the award to Ofer Azrielant, Andin/Jewelry.com CEO and Scott Lyle, Andin Vice President of Sales - Beryl Raff, JCPenney's Executive Vice President and General Merchandise Manager for Jewelry, highlighted Andin's role as a key player and initiator in fashion-forward fine jewelry merchandise.

Limited Brands Inc reported 2008 first quarter results.

First Quarter Results:
Earnings per share for the first quarter ended May 3, 2008, were $0.28 compared to $0.13 last year. First quarter operating income was $209.4 million compared to $108.5 million last year, and net income was $97.8 million compared to $52.9 million last year.

The 2008 results contain certain significant items totaling $0.18 per share. These items include:
• A pre-tax gain of $128 million ($81 million after-tax), or $0.24 per share, related to the sale of a non-core joint venture; and
• A pre-tax charge of $19 million ($19.6 million after-tax), or $0.06 per share, related to the impairment of the investment carrying value of another non-core joint venture.

Excluding these items, first quarter earnings per share were $0.11 compared to $0.13 last year; operating income was $100.4 million compared to $108.5 million last year; and net income was $36.4 million compared to $52.9 million last year.

Comparable store sales for the first quarter decreased 8 percent, and net sales were $1.925 billion compared to $2.311 billion last year.

Amplifying the brand's performance platform, Saucony Inc, a subsidiary of Collective Brands, Inc and a leading global supplier of performance athletic footwear and apparel, announced the signing of Olympic marathoner Magdalena Lewy Boulet to a multi-year endorsement contract.

Lewy Boulet earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team by finishing second in the 2008 U.S. Women's Olympic Marathon Trials held in Boston on April 20th.

Leading for much of the 26.2-mile race, she finished in a personal-best time of 2 hours, 30 minutes, 19 seconds. Lewy Boulet, 34, and a native of Poland, will represent the United States at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games this summer.

Disney World is an odd place to gather round with shelter workers to talk about pit bulls, but it's a Small World after all, so what the hec? - Bring it on. This year's HSUS Expo in Orlando FL was as otherworldly as one can expect. The convention center conveniently blocked any cell phone reception and Internet access, so you're essentially forced to give in to the scene and make nice with the pet stain remover lady who really really really wants you to try her product. Yay trade shows!

Our 'product' hung on banners on our booth walls and I don't mind saying how proud we were to have our dogs flashing their big-fat smiles at everyone who walked by. We shared a 'double wide' with Animal Farm Foundation and never stopped talking with the endless parade of people. I think we dreamt about talking once the lights went out. EVERYone wants to talk about pit bulls -- or, I should say, everyone who actually works with pit bulls wants to talk about pit bulls. The suits tend to steer clear, but it's only a matter of time. You know what they say.

Big thanks to all the people who piled in to hear our presentation. I didn't expect you to cheer when the slide came up showing the Vick dogs in their foster people's arms and I nearly choked up into an ugly-cry when you did. Caught myself tho' - Whew.



Combined with AFF, we gave away pounds and pounds of stuff. Some 200 magnets, 2000 Vick Dog trading cards (thank you Nicole), 500 Pit Bull Placebo books, hundreds of hand-outs, stacks of CDs with our materials, and finally, 500 posters ... Many were signed by Cooper, who drew fans like pit bulls rush to weed wackers.

SHELTERS!

Some stuff for you: Our new posters are online in case you need some positive imagery and healthy messaging for your cinder block walls. If you aren't a shelter, buy one or two anyway and have them delivered to your favorite ACO. We aren't marking these up, so hopefully they'll be affordable enough to get some mileage out there. ---> Getyer POSTERS

And finally, this little post-expo article was a good reminder why Mickey's madness is worth enduring. We look forward to next year (in Vegas - Woot!) and some more of that crazy non-stop talk.


Actress Jessica Alba, who is pregnant with her first child, has married long-time boyfriend Cash Warren.

Alba, 27, best-known for her roles in the TV drama Dark Angel and the movie Fantastic Four, announced she was engaged late last year. The baby is expected in the summer.

According to People magazine, who spoke with her PR, Brad Cafarelli: "The couple quietly wed (on) Monday."

Her wedding was such a quiet affair that even her brother, Josh Alba, was apparently caught off-guard.

When reached by US Weekly magazine with the news, he responded: "My sister!? I'm going to have to call her!"

The actress met Cash, 31, a producer, on the set of the first Fantastic Four in 2004. After a temporary split last summer, the two reconciled and announced the impending birth of their child in December, and their engagement shortly thereafter.

"Being pregnant is kind of like a sedative," Alba has said.

"I don't get as anxious about things. Like right now, a movie coming out, you know, over analyzing everything."

The news follows endless speculation on whether or not the couple would marry, with US Magazine previously reporting that Alba had no intention of walking down the aisle with a baby bump.

Previous reports claimed that one of the reasons Alba and Warren broke up in the first place was because he didn't want to marry and "wasn't ready."

Evonik Industries AG has signed an agreement for the sale of the Initiators Group to the U.S. investor Speyside Equity LLC for an undisclosed purchase price.

Pending the approval of Evonik’s Supervisory Board and the responsible antitrust authorities, the completion of the divestment transaction is expected for the second quarter of 2008.

The transaction includes the entire Initiators Group, with plants, amongst others, in Pullach, Germany and Elyria, Ohio, USA.

The business headquarters of the group will remain at the largest site: Pullach. Speyside Equity plans to continue the existing strategy.

The first U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) cotton forecast for 2008/09 indicates a small decrease in global cotton production, while world cotton mill use rises by a similar amount.

World production in 2008/09 is forecast to reach 118 million bales, a 2-percent decline or approximately 2.5 million bales. The dramatic decline in the United States’ production forecast is partially offset by gains in the total foreign crop, which is expected to increase about 2 percent.

Meanwhile, global mill use is projected to rise by 2 percent in 2008/09, a below-average growth rate, as the world economy continues to grow more slowly than in recent years. World cotton mill use is forecast at 127 million bales in 2008/09, compared with the current season’s 124.4 million bales.

Growth continues to come from outside the United States. With global mill use forecast to exceed production, 2008/09 ending stocks are projected to decline 6 million bales to nearly 55.6 million, the lowest in 5 years.

The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Health, and the Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment, released preliminary findings for 16 chemical substances identified as high priorities for action under Batch 2 of the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP).

"Canadians expect their government to protect the environment from harmful chemicals, and that's why we are taking action," said Minister Baird. "Our initial assessment shows that four of these chemicals should be kept out of our environment and as a result we will be working with stakeholders to stop the release of these substances at the source."

"Our recent actions on bisphenol-A demonstrated our commitment to protecting the health of Canadians," said Minister Clement. "Our government identified these substances as a priority for real action following our world-leading categorization process, and today's announcement is further proof of our commitment to the safe management of chemical substances."

Out of the 16 chemical substances, five are proposed "toxic" to the environment. Four of these chemicals are being considered for virtual elimination which aims to reduce the release of these chemicals to the smallest levels possible. In addition, five substances are being proposed as "not toxic" to the environment based on new information received from interested parties.

In a recent red carpet interview with The Sun, Heroes star Hayden Panettiere put Angelina Jolie at the top of the list for actresses she’d be happy to “have an affair with.”

Guys: Wait!! Don’t leave yet! The story’s not over!

After being asked about recent speculation regarding her sexual orientation, Panettiere told the interviewer, “that's fine with me. If I'm going to be linked with someone, I could do an affair with Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba or Charlize Theron” adding, “and Kate Beckinsale is gorgeous…there are so many beautiful girls.”

In a clear case of journalistic listlessness, the Sun reporter failed to follow up by asking if Hayden Panettiere would wear her Heroes cheerleader outfit for such a liaison.

Seriously, at least open another window if you have to. Don’t leave!

The diminutive actress, who turned 18 last August (but can easily pass for 16) and is currently dating “Heroes” co-star Milo Ventimiglia, is only the most recent in a long line of female celebs confessing to having a crush on Angelina Jolie.

In 2006, a then 19-year-old Lindsay Lohan admitted to being “infatuated” with Jolie, describing her as “sexy as hell” and telling Access Hollywood, after being asked about Brad Pitt, “well, he's beautiful, but I've got more of a crush on Angelina though.”

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and actress Fergie can add one more credit to her lengthy list shoe maven. Brown Shoe has signed with the multi-platinum artist to create her namesake shoe brand, appealing to fashionistas and Fergie fans alike.

"I have always loved fashion because it's a great way to express your mood. And I'm definitely a shoe lover," said Fergie.

"The right pair of shoes can change the feel of an outfit, and even change how a woman feels about herself. A woman can wear confidence on her feet with a high stiletto, or slip into weekend comfort with a soft ballet flat."

Brown Shoe product developers are collaborating with Fergie to capture her style sensibilities in a debut collection for spring 2009.

Fashion students of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), recently had an interesting project of designing Abaya, a traditional Islamic attire that is worn by Muslim women. The students had to stay in Qatar for 10 days, for understanding the culture and its association with the garment.

The innovative Abayas were showcased at Annual Student Fashion Show of VCU, where spectators were stunned to look at the creativity and experimentation that added style and grace to the otherwise this simple attire. The garment had exquisite embroidery and embellishments in a wide range of bright colours including red, blue, gold and silver.

After receiving loads of praise from the faculty and spectators, the garments were sent to Doha for another show at VCU School of Arts in Qatar.

The project is among a series of collaborations between students and faculty, at US colleges and their campuses, which are spread across nations.

With fashion entering the Gulf regions, the stylish women are ready to pay high prices for designer abaya, that are beautified with semi precious stones and rich embroidery.

Thus, there is a tremendous scope for designers to continue conceptualizing and innovating the customary clothing, which has just begun and has a bright future as well.

The eyewear brand Focus Point, also presented some of the latest sleek shades for fashion freaks. The latest range of sunshades was highly appreciated by the young onlookers who applauded endlessly when models sashayed on runway.

To make the fashion bonanza more popular among the spectators lot many activities took place including live music concerts by local artists like Amy Winehouse and Rihanna along with ballerina performance by young girls.
