...and I was thanked

First off, Happy Martin Luther King day, cause if there were ever a day worth celebrating, this is one of them!
--------------

A man came in my store today, he was different. I noticed right away that something wasn't normal but he was kind and full of life. I enjoyed our conversation and I sat there listing interested in his story of various moments he encountered and his "green" plans. As we said our goodbyes and he turned to leave the store, a lady came up to me and thanked me...

Thanked me for being so kind to him because she expressed that people usually act and treat him differently... That they get annoyed by his long, drawn out stories or slurred and hard to understand speech. She complimented me on my kindness and skills of treating him so normal. I just smiled at her and replied, "I treated him exactly like the human he is".

What saddens me about this situation is the fact that I was thanked for being kind to him... I am not thanked for treating someone without a disorder nice... what should be so different about this situation? The fact that he is mentally disabled? That shouldn't be a determining factor... because to be honest, his conversation was the best conversation I had all day... I should be thanking HIM.

Moral of the story: regardless of status, race, abilities, everyone should be treated with the same respect. We are all equal in our Makers eyes, why shouldn't we be equal in others?
