Reports out of Honolulu tonight are saying that the University of Hawaii will be joining the Mountain West Conference for football only. This is strange to me because I thought the MWC was committed to being an all sports conference. Obviously they have changed their stance.
The University of Hawaii will join the Mountain West Conference for football, sources confirmed to KITV4.
The move comes on the heels of top Western Athletic Conference teams leaving the conference. Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State bolted for the MWC.
Hawaii will be part of the MWC just for football. It will be part of the Big West Conference for the other sports, sources told KITV4 Sports.
So what does this all mean? I really don’t know. What we do know is that the MWC will now sit at 11 teams for football once all the conference shifting is complete. 11 is not a good number. I am assuming that means the Mountain West Conference is expecting to lose or add another team.
Is the MWC expecting TCU to bolt to the Big East? That is a possibility. It is also a possibility that the Mountain West Conference did this to officially kill of the WAC. With Hawaii gone, the WAC won’t meet the criteria to be a conference.
All I know at this point is that TCU just needs to hurry up and accept an invitation to the Big East. It is time to get out of the Mountain West Conference.
