When you hear the names Sammy Baugh, Davey O’Brien, and LaDainian Tomlinson you think TCU icons. All 3 of those players have either had their number retired or honored by TCU. The question is…does Any Dalton belong with that group? Should TCU retire Andy Dalton’s number 14?

No, Andy Dalton didn’t deliver a National Championship or a Heisman trophy, but he did propel TCU football to heights they hadn’t reached since I’ve been alive. I love LaDainian Tomlinson as much as the next person, but he didn’t do the things for TCU football that Dalton did.

Obviously Sammy Baugh and Davey O’Brien are football legends. They both have awards named after them, but that doesn’t mean Andy Dalton shouldn’t be in the same conversation. Dalton has won more games and thrown for more yards and touchdowns than anyone else in school history. When a player breaks records held by Sammy Baugh, that means something in my book.

Not only does Dalton hold pretty much every passing related record in TCU’s record book, he was a 3 time bowl MVP, led TCU to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, back-to-back Mount West Conference Championships, back-to-back BCS bowl games, a Rose Bowl victory, and a perfect 13-0 season.

LaDainian Tomlinson got the ball rolling in the right direction for this TCU program. Tomlinson deserves a lot of credit for what TCU football has become, but he didn’t accomplish half the things Dalton did while he was at TCU. Dalton took what L.T. accomplished and raised TCU to a level that fans could only dream about.

As far as TCU careers go, Andy Dalton had one of the all-time best. He took TCU places that I had only imagined in my wildest dreams. I never thought I would get to see the Frogs in the Rose Bowl! If I am TCU, I wait a year or two and officially retire #14. It would be the right thing to do.
