Is the old Dirk back? (When did he leave?) Michael Wilbon thinks so as he led off half time of the Mavs/Hornets game with these comments about Dirk.
“It looks like the old Dirk Nowitzki. He is showing passion, scoring, and aggression. I’m not saying it’s as good as his MVP season but he is so assertive now.”
“A year ago it looked like he was on the decline,” but “It looks like Dirk can carry the team again like he wasn’t able to last season.”
07-08 season: 23.6 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 3.5 apg
06-07 MVP season: 24.6 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 3.4 apg
There are a couple of things to take from those numbers:
- Dirk was not on a decline last season, he averaged more points and assists than his career average
- He is having just as good of a season as he did during his MVP year, if not better
- If he does not finish in the top 5 of MVP voting this season it will be a disgrace
- Dirk has been killing all season with 23 straight games of 20 points or more
Just one more thing, Dirk has averaged AT LEAST 20 points per game in the last 9 seasons. The Mavs are headed to the playoffs for their 9th straight year. Coincidence?? I think not…
