Well, the Mavs bring in another new face, or are about to as Tim Thomas is in town trying to seal the deal on a contract. No contract has been finalized, but everyone is expecting it.
Thomas brings the Mavs some much needed shooting off the bench, especially since Matt Carroll didn’t work out at all last season. The New Jersey native is a career 11 point and 4 rebound guy who shoots 36% percent from behind the arc. Dallas will be his seventh NBA team.
I will say the same thing about Tim Thomas as I did about Gooden. They aren’t going to win you a championship, but the Mavs continue to improve their bench.
I see a couple issues with this signing though.
1. How will Dirk and Thomas get along? They have history. Remember Tim blowing Dirk a kiss and then Dirk dropping 50 points him?
2. This signing could mean Hollins or Singleton or both might be out the door. I think Ryan Hollins is a good, young center and the Mavs should try and hold on to him. He is a restricted free agent, but there are reports out there that say the Pacers could offer him a contract. If that offer is over around $1 million, the Mavs probably won’t match. I have a feeling James Singleton will be back, but I don’t think he will see as many minutes this season.
