The Super Bowl of European Soccer takes place later this afternoon as Inter Milan and Bayern Munich face off in the UEFA Champions League Final. Normally this would be the biggest soccer match and one of the highest rated sporting events of the year, but with the World Cup going on this summer, it might have to take a very close second place.

The 2009 Champions League final between Manchester United and Barcelona drew 1.43 million viewers here in the United States making it the most-watched UEFA soccer game in the history of U.S. Cable. The match drew in over 11 million people in Spain, and over 9 million in England and Italy. In case you haven’t got it yet, it’s a BIG deal.

This year’s final takes place in Madrid Spain between Inter Milan (Italy) and Bayern Munich (Germany) and it can all be seen at 1:30 PM Central time on Fox. Yes, that’s right, Fox. It will be nationally broadcast and should make for an excellent free flowing game.

Both teams enter today’s game chasing the treble. Both squads won their league and main cup competition, now all that’s left is 90 minutes until one side gets to hoist another trophy.

I am torn on which side I think will come out on top. As I stated above, both teams have had great success this season, and both have high quality talent on their roster. Bayern and Inter have previously met four times in European competition with Bayern holding the edge with two wins to one. My gut tells me to go with Inter Milan on this one but I expect it to be close the whole way.

As a side note, both teams have numerous players taking part in this summer’s World Cup. I bet the managers of those teams, especially Italy and Germany will be watching this match while holding their breath, and hoping for no injuries. Germany was already dealt a blow last week when they found out Michael Ballack won’t be able to participate this summer.
