The first weekend of college football is finally in the books, and it was a good one for the BCS Busters and other non-BCS teams.

- Utah took down #15 Pittsburgh at home 27-24 while holding Dion Lewis to 75 yards rushing.

- New Mountain West Conference member Nevada beat Eastern Washington 49-24.

- BYU who I don’t like to mention beat Washington 23-17.

- #6 TCU beat #24 Oregon State 30-21. Andy Dalton had 3 total touchdowns and the Frogs defense limited Jazquizz Rodgers to 75 yards rushing.

- The other new member of the Mountain West, Fresno State came from behind to beat defending Big East Champ Cincinnati 28-14.

- And the biggest win of the weekend comes from Boise State defeating Virginia Tech 33-30 on the road at FedEx Field. Kellen Moore led a Broncos come back drive with less than two minutes left to win the game.

As honorable mention I have to give a shout out to Jacksonville State for upsetting Ole Miss 49-48 in double OT.

People can continue to hate on the non-BCS teams, but they continue to show their talent when matched up with some of the best teams in the country. TCU improved to 14-3 in their last 17 games with the win over Oregon State on Saturday. There isn’t a large gap between the BCS and non-BCS teams like there used to be. That gap has been closed and teams like Boise State and TCU are knocking on the door of a possible National Championship appearance.

All the doubters always want to say, well the non-BCS teams couldn’t hang week in and week out in the big conferences. Well, it looks to me like Pitt, Oregon State, and Washington couldn’t hang week in and week out in the Mountain West Conference. I just don’t know if Virginia Tech could compete week in and week out in the WAC…Hmmm.
