Sporting News has named three players off TCU's top-ranked defense to its 2009 All-America teams.
Horned Frog defensive end Jerry Hughes is a first-team selection, linebacker Daryl Washington appears on the second team and cornerback Rafael Priest is a third-team pick.
Hughes has 15 tackles for loss, including 11 1/2 sacks. The senior from Sugar Land, Texas, was the recipient of the Lott Trophy and Ted Hendricks Award. He was also a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award. Hughes is a consensus All-American for the second straight season.
Washington tops TCU with 99 tackles, the most stops by a Horned Frog since 2004 (Martin Patterson, 131). A senior from Irving, Texas, Washington was a Dick Butkus Award semifinalist. He has 7 1/2 tackles for loss and is tied for the TCU lead with three interceptions.
A signature play for Washington was catching Clemson's C.J. Spiller from behind to make a touchdown-saving tackle in TCU's 14-10 win in Death Valley.
A senior from Dallas, Priest has made 50 career starts for the Horned Frogs. Playing as a graduate student this fall, he was ranked by Rivals.com as the nation's sixth-best cornerback. He has seven pass breakups.
In the fourth quarter of their final home game, Washington and Priest returned interceptions for touchdowns just 2:20 apart in a 51-10 victory over New Mexico.
