Controversy Sells

With the latest release of the week 7 college football rankings, the conspiracy theories have began to run wild. All three major polls had Ohio State, Oregon and Boise State as their top three, after that, it gets a little fuzzy.

The surprise was everyone keeping Alabama ahead of South Carolina.

Alabama is No. 8 to South Carolina's No. 10 in the AP, No. 8 to South Carolina's No. 12 in the coaches' poll and No. 8 to South Carolina's 11 in Harris.

Wait a minute - did anyone watch the game?

I could not agree more. Add in the fact that some people like Desmond Conner have Alabama at #3 above Auburn and South Carolina, it gets even more ridiculous.

Desmond Conner, UConn beat writer for the Hartford Courant, submitted a ballot that included the following slotting of teams:

No. 3: Alabama, No. 8 Auburn, No. 13 South Carolina

On Sept. 27, Auburn beat South Carolina 35-27.

On Oct. 9, South Carolina beat Alabama 35-21.

So, according to Desmond Conner, Alabama is a better team than both Auburn and South Carolina, the former that beat the latter and the latter that beat the then-No. 1 team by two touchdowns. Absolutely. Amazing.

It doesn’t get any better either, especially if you are a TCU or Boise State fan. Is there a conspiracy to keep Oregon State ranked low so it doesn’t benefit the Frogs or Broncos? Here is more from Kentucky.com

The AP is the only major poll this week that has Oregon State, No. 24 this week, ranked in the top 25.You read that right.

The years-long joke called the USA Today poll unveiled a list and two-loss Oregon State wasn't on it. But two-loss Florida was?

Oregon State improved to 3-2 with a victory at No. 9 Arizona. The Beavers' losses this year have come against the coaches' current No. 3, Boise State, and No. 5, Texas Christian. Oregon State's strength of schedule is ranked No.1 in the latest Sagarin ratings, which has the Beavers at No. 6 for BCS-rankings purposes.

So while No. 1 Ohio State plays its second game outside Columbus next week at Wisconsin, and coaches' No. 11 Michigan State won't play a game outside the state until Oct. 23 at Northwestern, Oregon State has already played TCU in Texas, at Boise State and Arizona in Tucson. Beavers are used to mud, but not when it's thrown in their faces.

I’m normally not one for conspiracy theories, but all of this seems kind of strange. Hopefully all of this will work itself out by the end of the season. If not, we could have BCS Chaos once again.
