A lot of the talk about the NBA season to this point has been about Carmelo Anthony and his desire to leave Denver. Obviously a lot of teams are interested in his services, but Melo has made it clear that he wants to be in New York. That doesn’t seem to bother Mavs owner Mark Cuban. Ken Berger had this posting on CBSSports.com today.

The Dallas Mavericks are plotting an aggressive push to acquire Carmelo Anthony, even if they don’t get assurances that the three-time All-Star would agree to a contract extension as part of the trade, league sources told CBSSports.com.

Despite his team’s emergence as one of the powers of the Western Conference -- and, as Dallas proved Monday night in Miami, the whole league -- owner Mark Cuban is said to be not only willing to take a chance on Anthony, but eager to steal him from the Nets, who are owned by his billionaire rival, Mikhail Prokhorov. In a deal that would provide Denver with little more than future savings, the Mavs are planning what one rival executive described as a “hard” push.

I am all for bringing Melo to Dallas, but what will the Mavs have to give up? The addition of Anthony to this team would definitely make the Mavs legitimate title contenders, but are the Mavs willing to sacrifice the future of the franchise for a small window of opportunity? Would Mavs fans be ok with trading Roddy B? It would basically be the same situation the Rangers had with Cliff Lee. You rent a player and hope there is some way of convincing him to stay with the team and the end of the season.
