Coming into this season NBA season, I was unenthused about the Mavericks. Like a lot of others, I was not expecting anything different than what we had seen in the past, another first round exit. I was underwhelmed when the Mavs announced they traded for Tyson Chandler. I thought there was no way he could get this team over the hump, I was wrong.
This is not the same Maverick team we have seen in the past. The addition of Tyson Chandler has completely changed this team’s style and mindset. On Monday, Dirk compared the addition of Chandler to when the Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett. "I don't think Ray Allen or Paul Pierce were great defenders before K.G. got there," Nowitzki said. "But, K.G., with his energy, his defense, his mentality and his high-octane self, he kind of changed the whole momentum on the defense. I think that's what Tyson did here."
Chandler’s attitude on the defensive end has worn off on everybody. The entire team plays hard on defense now, including Dirk. The Mavs have always had the offense, but Dallas is currently 5th in points allowed, and 6th in rebounds per game. If those trends continue, there is a good chance this team will make a deep run into the postseason.
The key is, “if these trends continue.” Last season the Mavs started the season playing good defense, but around this time it started to slip. Can the Mavs keep up the defensive mindset all season long? We will have to wait and see, but I like what I have seen so far.
