As I have been trying to get past TCU’s win/loss over San Diego State on Saturday and the fact that TCU could be left out of a BCS Bowl, I came across a very interesting point. Now, I am not holding my breath because I will never trust the BCS system, but this is interesting to think about.
The BCS Cartel is under constant criticism and pressure. They don’t like that. They also really don’t want congress to get involved and break up their money making scam. If Boise jumps TCU and the Frogs ranked at #4 in the country are left out of a BCS game, it will cause chaos. It will put a lot of unwanted, negative attention on the BCS. The BCS knows though, that this will be the last year they will have to deal with both Boise State and TCU.
Next season Boise State will be joining the Mountain West Conference thus playing TCU every season in conference. The loser of that game will basically be eliminated from any BCS contention. That means the BCS would only have to award one non-AQ team a BCS bid if they qualified. This is the last season they will have to deal with two non-AQ teams threatening their system. If they put both TCU and Boise into the BCS this year, it would allow them to avoid all of the negative publicity, and keep their fraudulent system in place.
The BCS knows that if they can survive this season, they will be clear from having to award two of their BCS bids to non-AQ schools ever again. Not just TCU and Boise State either. Nevada and Fresno State are joining the MWC in 2012 so that puts them in the same boat as the Frogs and Broncos. Utah is going to the Pac-10 and BYU will become irrelevant.
Everyone knows that TCU and Boise should both be in BCS games this season, but you can’t ever put anything past the BCS. I’m not big on conspiracy theories, but it’s something I like to think about when I want to be a little less depressed about the Frogs current situation. I wish the Big East would just hurry up and extend an all sports invitation.
