I blogged about this back in March, and as a soccer fan, I am extremely excited for this event. It gives fans here in the U.S. the opportunity to see teams and players they normally don’t have the chance to see in person. Even though it is preseason, they still play their main guys a good amount of minutes. It gets underway tonight and all the matches will be televised on ESPN or ESPN 2.

I have tickets to the Chelsea v. Club America game on the 26th and it can’t come fast enough. If anyone else is going to be there, let me know! Here are some details.





Overview

Four of the best soccer teams in the world will compete in the United States this summer in the inaugural World Football Challenge, a six-city round robin tournament.

The World Football Challenge will give soccer fans the unprecedented opportunity to see global superstars such as John Terry, Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Ronaldinho, Gennaro Gattuso, Julio Cesar, Javier Zanetti, Pavel Pardo and Salvador Cabañas play live in the U.S. and experience first-hand the fast-paced, skillful competition that has made soccer the most popular sport in the world.

Broadcaster

ESPN, the U.S. English-language television home of the Men’s and Women’s FIFA World Cups and other marquee international soccer competitions, is the broadcast partner and will televise all matches on ESPN or ESPN2. Matches will also air on ESPN’s Spanish-language sports network, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN360.com, the company’s live sports broadband network.

Tournament Rules

The World Football Challenge is a four-team round robin tournament. Clubs will receive three points for a win that does not go into penalty kicks. After 90 minutes of play, if the match is tied, each team will receive one point and then winner of the penalty kicks will receive an additional point. The team with the highest overall number of points will determine the World Football Challenge champion.
