18 cities have been selected to possibly hold World Cup events if the U.S. was to get the bid, and Dallas, TX is one of them. The United States is looking to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022 and Dallas brings a lot to the table.
According to the City Hall Dallas Morning News blog, Officials with the U.S. bid committee cited the availability of the Cowboys Stadium and the Cotton Bowl as a reason Dallas was selected.
The Cotton Bowl hosted six matches back in 1994, but surely the World Cup officials would be a lot more interested in playing their games inside Cowboys Stadium. Cowboys Stadium as we have seen, can expand to hold up to 100,000 fans, and also has already shown it can host soccer matches. Another key component here is that the World Cup will only play their matches on natural grass, which the Cotton Bowl is and Cowboys Stadium can be. Cowboys Stadium brought in natural grass for the Chelsea/Club America game in early July.
I think this is great if it actually happens. I really wasn’t into soccer yet when it was here last time around, but I would definitely check it out this time around.
The other cities are: Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Miami, Indianapolis, Nashville, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix. Among the nine cities not selected were Chicago, Cleveland, San Francisco and St. Louis.
