From TCU Media Relations: American Heart Association and Marathon Oil have announced TCU football coach Gary Patterson as a finalist for the 2010 Paul "Bear" Bryant Award.

The Paul “Bear” Bryant Award honors excellence in coaching while raising funds to fight heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers, respectively. The Bryant Award is the only college football coaching honor voted on after all bowl games are played.

Patterson has led No. 3 TCU to its second straight BCS appearance with a Jan. 1 date versus No. 5 Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO. In posting their second consecutive undefeated regular season, the Horned Frogs have won 12 games in a row to tie for the nation's second-longest current winning streak.

TCU is one of just two schools to rank in the top 10 in the nation in total offense, total defense, scoring offense and scoring defense.

The Horned Frogs are looking to become just the third program in NCAA history, and the first since 1987 (Oklahoma, 1985-87), to lead the nation in total defense in three consecutive seasons.

Patterson has led the Horned Frogs to at least 10 wins in seven of the last nine years, including six 11-win campaigns and back-to-back 12-win seasons. No other coach in TCU history has more than two 10-win seasons.

Patterson’s 97-28 (.776) record ranks third among active coaches (minimum 5 years) in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Since arriving at TCU as defensive coordinator in 1998, Patterson has guided the Horned Frogs to five conference titles and 12 bowl games in 13 seasons.

Patterson was selected for nine national coaching honors last season after leading TCU to a 12-1 record, Fiesta Bowl appearance and No. 6 ranking.

Patterson was named National Coach of the Year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association and Sporting News while also receiving the Bobby Dodd Award, Eddie Robinson Award, Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award, George Munger Award and Woody Hayes Award.
