Former TCU linebacker Daryl Washington was drafted in the second round by the Arizona Cardinals.

As the 47th-overall selection, Washington is the ninth-highest draft pick from the defensive side of the ball in TCU history.

Washington was the second TCU player drafted in the opening two rounds. Two-time consensus All-America defensive end Jerry Hughes was a first-round pick Thursday of the Indianapolis Colts.

Washington is the 23rd player drafted in the nine-year tenure of TCU head coach Gary Patterson.

In Hughes and Washington, TCU has its first players selected in the opening two rounds since running back LaDainian Tomlinson (San Diego Chargers) and defensive end Aaron Schobel (Buffalo Bills) were first- and second-round picks, respectively, in 2001.

Washington is the third TCU linebacker drafted in the last two seasons (Jason Phillips, Baltimore Ravens, 2009; Robert Henson, Washington Redskins, 2009). David Hawthorne signed as a free agent with Seattle in 2008 and led the Seahawks last season with 117 tackles.

Washington's home games in the NFL will be played in the same stadium (University of Phoenix Stadium) where he closed his collegiate career, helping lead TCU to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Washington was selected to four All-America teams last season and was a semifinalist for the Dick Butkus Award, honoring the nation's top linebacker. Washington was named the Best Linebacker in the State by Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

A native of Irving, Texas, Washington led TCU with 109 tackles, the most stops by a Horned Frog since 2004 (Martin Patterson, 131). Washington's 11 tackles for loss, including 3 1/2 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, placed second on TCU behind only Hughes.

A four-year letterman, Washington totaled 210 tackles in his TCU career. As a sophomore, he tied for the national lead with three punt blocks.

Washington is on pace to graduate next month with a degree in communications.

Rounds four through seven of the 2010 NFL Draft begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
