TCU football coach Gary Patterson has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association.

Patterson received selection by members attending the 2010 AFCA Convention in Orlando, Fla.

I’m very honored and humbled that the Board thought enough of me to ask me to help represent my fellow coaches, Patterson said. I never thought I¹d have this opportunity. I’ve just focused on being the best football coach I could be.

Patterson guided the 2009 Horned Frogs to a 12-1 record, No. 6 national ranking and their first BCS appearance. TCU, with just 13 seniors on the roster and only six in the starting lineup, posted three wins over teams ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25: No. 12 BYU, No. 18 Utah and No. 24 Clemson.

Patterson received nine national coaching honors in 2009. He was named National Coach of the Year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, Associated Press, Sporting News and AFCA. He also received the Bobby Dodd Award, Eddie Robinson Award, Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award, George Munger Award and Woody Hayes Award.

Patterson joins a group of distinguished head coaches who guide the AFCA. The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the organization, which was founded in 1922 by Amos Alonzo Stagg, John Heisman and others. The AFCA has more than 11,000 members from all levels of the profession.

Returning members of the AFCA Board of Trustees include incoming president Larry Kehres of Mount Union College, first vice-president Rob Ash of Montana State University, second vice-president Tim Murphy of Harvard University and third vice-president Rich Rodriguez of the University of Michigan.

Also serving on the Board in 2010: Mike Welch, Ithaca College; Jim Tressel, Ohio State University; Mack Brown, University of Texas; Lee Owens, Ashland University; Jim Grobe, Wake Forest University; Bill Cronin, Georgetown College (Ky.); Lou Tepper, Indiana University (Pa.); Frank Solich, Ohio University; Randy Edsall, University of Connecticut; Bobby Johnson, Vanderbilt University; Turner Gill, University of Kansas and Mike Riley, Oregon State University. AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff serves as secretary-treasurer of the organization.
