The Maxwell Football Club has announced that TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes and head coach Gary Patterson are semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and George Munger Award, respectively.

The Chuck Bednarik Award honors the nation's most outstanding defensive player. Hughes is one of 16 semifinalists.

A 2008 consensus All-American, Hughes has 10 1/2 tackles for loss with nine sacks. The senior from Sugar Land, Texas, is averaging 1.1 sacks per game, on pace with the 1.2 mark he had last season when he led the nation with 15 sacks. Hughes is also averaging 5.0 tackles per game, ahead of his 4.0 clip

from a year ago. He currently ranks fourth on the Horned Frogs with 40 stops.

Hughes was named to all five Midseason All-America teams (SI.com, CBSSports.com, Sporting News, CollegeFootballNews.com and Phil Steele¹s). He is also one of 10 finalists for the Lowe¹s Senior CLASS Award, one of 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award and one of 20 quarterfinalists for the Lott Trophy.

At an Oct. 29 luncheon at the Dallas Cowboys¹ stadium, Hughes received a Local Hero Award from Bank of America for his work in the community.

Patterson, in his ninth season as head coach and 12th year overall at TCU, is one of 15 candidates for the George Munger Award for College Coach of the Year. He is also on the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award Watch List.

The Horned Frogs (8-0, 4-0) are ranked fourth nationally by USA Today and have won 10 in a row for the nation¹s fourth-longest current winning streak. TCU is one of seven undefeated teams remaining in the nation.

TCU leads the nation in total defense (235.8 yards per game) while averaging a school-record 447.0 yards per game in total offense.

Patterson has produced five 10-win seasons in the last seven years, including four 11-win campaigns since 2003. No other coach in TCU history has more than two 10-win seasons.

Patterson's 81-27 (.750) record is the best mark of the four coaches at TCU to be on the sideline for at least 100 games. The .750 winning percentage is second among TCU coaches with more than 20 games under their belt and seventh among active coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Since arriving at TCU as defensive coordinator in 1998, Patterson has helped guide the Frogs to four conference titles and 10 bowl games in 11 seasons. TCU is one of just seven programs to have a current bowl winning streak of at least four games.
